Taking Liberty Gabe Quinn Thriller Series Book 3 edition by Keith Houghton Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Either I'm not very intuitive when I read, or Keith Houghton is a master at constructing his plots so that the reader has no ability to guess where the story will take them. I've found this to be true in the other Houghton books I've read. His plots have many twists and turns. He leads the reader to think one thing and always makes the final big reveal a HUGE surprise. I've found that makes my reading experience extremely satisfying. I highly recommend reading the Gabe Quinn series in order because themes and characters flow through them all. However, each book has a satisfying ending. There is plenty of action and character depth, plenty of emotional trials and thrills for the characters. I do warn future readers that Keith Houghton is British. I was shocked to learn that after the first book, because I had not guessed. But in the second and third books, I notice turns of phrase that do point to his native country. However, I didn't find this necessarily a negative. I love most things British. And it isn't glaring enough to interrupt the flow. Instead I found it like looking for "British pearls" among the American plot and locations. I have highly enjoyed this series so far. And it looks like there should be a fourth book. Unfortunately, I think it will be November before it is published. Yikes. November come quickly!Product details

Not disappointed at all with this third book in the series. Just a super read.
This one starts out with a guy turning himself into a barbequed corpse outside the world famous Chines theatre on Hollywood Boulevard.
Of course he was tricked into doing this by Cornsilk. He had no idea he would be turning himself into a crispy critter. He just wanted to make a statement. A statement directed at Gabe Quinn. He actually thought his two companions were on his side. Silly idiot.
Of course the only part he played was as the crispy critter. He was just the poor schmuck who turned himself into that crispy critter . A part of someone elses agenda. Well two someones actually.
Where's Gabe will all this is going on? Why in jail of course. He's at the Fed Med. A federal prison for the criminally insane.
Gabe shot Mason Stone, FBI Agent, trying to protect his son George. You know George. He's The Undertaker. A guy Gabe had been chasing. A serial killer. Gabe was flabbergasted to learn the killer was his own son George. Stone knew so Gabe emtied a clip into him. Just a Dad protecting his son.
Of course Stone had his vest on and wasn't killed. He had Gabe arrested and sent to the Fed Med. Of course he had an ulterior motive.
Gabe goes undercover for Stone. He was actually at the Fed Med to get close to Trenton Fillmore an accountant. An accountant with info the FBI wanted. Gabe was doing his best to get Fillmore to open up to him and spill the beans when Fillmore is killed.
So begins one super read.
Gabe is pulled out of the Fed Med after Fillmores death and he's whisked away to Alaska.
Why you might ask? Well a body was found in Alaska. A body in the lotus position. Another body that was turned into a crispy critter. Serial killer you might ask. Well hell yeah. Another one with all the earmarks of the ex-FBI Agent and serial killer Cornsilk.
This was one super read full of Russian mafia, girls sold into slavery as sex slaves, crooked cops, crooked corrections officers at the Fed Med, friends who turn out to be anything but and of course everyones all time favorite Cornsilk. Throw in The Undertaker and you have a recipe for one great read.
Many twists and turns in this one and one surprise ending to boot.
We also get Liberty Rae Burnett, FBI Agent, and an old lover of Gabes. She's on the scene and Gabes partner.
Just one super read and well worth those Five Stars and I can hardly wait for number four. Look out Gabe.
To my surprise, I did not enjoy this book nor did I even finish it. After reading the first 2 books of the series I had been looking forward to the third. However, in this story I found Quinn's recovery from terrible physical injury to be too unreal and his fanatical anger to come across as irrational, immoral, thoughtless and selfish beyond reason. The further I got into Liberty, the less I enjoyed the journey. Altogether this book was a huge disappointment for me.
Quinn returns and takes us on another twisted journey. Between The Undertaker and Snakeskin, it is easy to have your head on a swivel going back and forth wondering for whom you should be watching. Add in a past lover, a frenemy, and a surprise roommate, and you have a recipe for something wild and unusual. We have seen piano wire, poison, explosives, and now we add arson. With a vengeance, I might add. Once again, I could not put the book down.
Quinn has real fears, realistic actions, and a psychological state worthy of years of psychoanalysis. Sometimes, I was left wondering where the line is between cop and killer. Perhaps we all struggle with the line between good and evil, and Quinn just shows us that in graphic, clear detail. His struggles as he tries to decide what to do show us how being pushed to the edge can change our moral outlook, and how difficult it can be to keep from crossing the line.
I highly recommend this book. One of the very best I have read in the past year.
